History of Carnelian
As one of the oldest gemstones for human beings, carnelian was highly valued in ancient civilizations. Ancient Egyptians named it “the setting sun”, placing carnelian amulets in tombs to protect the deceased and guide them through the underworld. Ancient Roman soldiers wore carnelian accessories for courage and authority; officials and merchants used polished carnelian as wax seals for legal documents, for hot wax does not stick to this stone. It has long symbolized clarity, courage and resolution.
Is Carnelian a Rock or Crystal?
Carnelian is a crystalline mineral (not a rock), a variant of chalcedony (microcrystalline quartz). It forms slowly in volcanic rock cavities via long-term silica water deposition. With a Mohs hardness of 6.5–7, it is dense, durable and smooth, suitable for jewelry making and crystal meditation.
